Jerry and I appraoching the top of Diamond Head

DSC_0015, originally uploaded by Spazyone.

Here we are! We are so grateful for our two families who each gave us a week's free lodging in Hawaii. My mom and dad and our son and his wife.

We had a great time. On our hike up Diamond Head, we went early in the morning to avoid the heat of the day. There were many friendly people we met along the way. Jerry, as a MAJOR, war and history buff, loved seeing the tunnels and bunkers carved into the mountain by hand.

The view of Honolulu was spectacular!!

You can see more photos of our trip on my Flickr account. The link is on the left side of the page. Go to the Hawaii collection and look ant the different sets of photos.

The trekking poles really helped on the hike. As most of you know, I am not supposed to walk very far without a cane. However, since the problem is both hips, I chose trekking poles. That way I get the support but can walk in an anatomically correct manner. Those poles came in handy the whole trip.

I will post more little mini-journals of our trip.

Mercy

Mercy Ministries .
. .  Valuing every young woman's future

A great organization whose mission is to help young women to deal with emotional and physical problems.

If you or a loved one suffer from any of these difficulties and you want to talk to someone locally, call or e-mail me.

There are people near you who have been there, understand and want to help.

From the Mercy Ministries web site:

Mercy Ministries is a non-profit organization for young women who face life-controlling issues. We provide residential programs free of charge designed to address the whole person: spiritual, physical and emotional. Our non-conventional approach to the underlying issues changes more than behavior; the Mercy Ministries program changes hearts and stops destructive cycles.

Our program includes life-skills training and educational opportunities that help ensure the success of our graduates. Our goal is to have each young woman not only complete the program but also discover the purpose for her life and bring value to her community as a productive citizen.

We have three facilities in the United States: Nashville, TN has 40 beds, Monroe, LA has 20 beds and St. Louis, Missouri has 30 beds. Plans are underway for a 40 bed home in Sacramento, California.

Since 1983, we have served thousands of
young women from all over the world with varied cultural and socio-economic
backgrounds. Young women who come to Mercy Ministries are often facing a combination of difficult circumstances such as:

Abuse

Self-Harm

Depression

Addictions

Unplanned Pregnancy

Eating Disorders

Many of these girls have sought treatment before with unsuccessful long-term results. Residents are in the program an average of six months and our services reflect their diverse needs. Our residents are young women who want to change and move beyond their difficult circumstances, yet have never found a source for help before Mercy Ministries. Young women who have graduated from the Mercy Ministries program are truly transformed. They are found in universities, corporations, ministries, the mission field, and raising families. At Mercy Ministries, they learn to believe in themselves and in God's love for them and gain life-skills that equip them for successful reintegration into society.

For our pregnant residents, we provide a Basic Decision Making Program that assists the young woman in deciding about parenting or placing her baby for adoption. We provide parenting classes for those who decide to parent and grief counseling for those who chose to place their child.

Since 1987, we have had the joy of assisting hundreds of birth mothers with the placement of their babies into loving faithful families. We have also had the joy of over 150 babies being born to girls who have decided to parent their child.

Due to the generosity of many individuals, businesses and foundations, Mercy Ministries operates debt free and only expands after raising the funds for operating a new home. We do not receive any state or federal funding. We are audited by an independent accounting firm each year, and our 2005 audit shows we spent 76% of our operating expenses on program costs.

endless possibility

Here are the words to a song I wrote recently.

endless possibility

I’ll never be the same again
Never feel the way I felt
Never be just who I want
And maybe that’s not so bad

Rely on Me is what You say
Live in My strength,
Trust and obey
All the rest is meaningless
Will waste away, return to dust
Help me see what You see in me
And know that with You that’s
Endless possibility

I just can’t do the things I want
Stop doing things I want to stop
Quit messing up and falling down
And maybe that’s not so bad

Rely on Me is what You say
Live in My strength,
Trust and obey
All the rest is meaningless
Will waste away, return to dust
Help me see what You see in me
And know that with You that’s
Endless possibility

All my thoughts You knew before
Yet You loved me still somehow
I loved You back, you took me in
And now it’s not so bad

Rely on Me is what You say
Live in My strength,
Trust and obey
All the rest is meaningless
Will waste away, return to dust
Help me see what You see in me
And know that with You that’s
Endless possibility

What I know, what I believe, are different now, hard to conceive
What You see, what You show, what You’ve planned for me, I know
I’m dreaming now, Your thoughts in mine, I wait for You, our hearts entwined
There’s nothing left but
endless possibility

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under Heaven.

Gabriel and the Vagabond

I just love this song by Foy Vance. Here is the vid and the lyrics are below. When was the last time you got down beside someone and whispered hope in the name of the Lord? I need to do it more often, I know.

Gabriel and the Vagabond

There's a man in on corner and his clothes are worn
And he's holding out his hand
You could see in his eyes as the people walk by
He knows they don't understand

Ya see they just think he's gonna take their money
And go and spend it all on dope
Then a man stopped by and I saw a smile inside
As he gently whispered "hope"

Well the tramp started to cry, just kept saying,
"Why? why? why?
Could you see I'm a dying tonight
Well I'm 32 and I've got this one pair of shoes
And a bad taste in my mouth
I think it's clear to see that even God don't love me
Or else why would He leave me this way."

Then Gabriel just smiled and said be peaced my child
Salvation is here today

He got up to his feet and he sang Hallelujah
People were turning around in the street
He looked them in the eyes and he sang,
"Hallelujah, there's someone here that you gotta meet
Someone you just gotta meet."

When the vagabond turned around well without a sign
Gabriel just smiled and disappeared
Then he looked to the crowd and they were laughing out loud
But he could not see them fore tears
When his vision came round
There was a young girl on the ground
I knew she was fine and hard to cope (I think he sings she was finding it hard to cope)
She never was a fighter until he laid beside her
And gently whispered "hope"

They got up to their feet and they sang Hallelujah
People in the street were turning around
They looked them in the eyes and they sang,
"Hallelujah, there's someone here we have found"
They sang,
"Hallelujah, Hallelujah
We are the voices crying in the wilderness
Hallelujah, Hallelujah."
The people in the street started their sins to confess
And a chorus of,
"Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Every knee will bow and every tongue confess
and the voice of one crying in the wilderness crying
Hallelujah, Hallelujah"

MIT Students Create Car That Drives Itself

Nice! Now if I only had the $400,000 to buy me one. Does it come with a fridge and hot tub? TV and DVD player? WII with Guitar Hero, yeah that's the ticket . . . hmmm would you get a ticket? I recently heard (hat tip to mk) about a woman who put her RV on cruise control and then walked back into the kitchen to make a sandwich. This would have eliminated the wreck and subsequent lawsuit that she won because she thought it was already installed!? I guess with the millions she won, she should buy this system for her RV, or just make her wraps pre-trip like the rest of us. She's definitely trippin' in more ways than one.

Blackle - Energy Saving Search

Google in an eco friendly form

Save energy using Blackle instead of Google. Here is an explanation
from the site:

How is Blackle saving energy?

Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.

Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open
application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, x_bu2002

In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.

We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy.

As of now, it is estimated that 147,552.808 Watt hours have already been saved by this new black version of Google. Black is beautiful even in the virtual world!

If you keep a couple of tabs open, go back to the Blackle tab when you are not using the computer to save energy.

Check it out here: Blackle

Woman on Memri TV on Muslim Culture Clash

Not Invulnerable

Trust flows between us, a ribbon of years collecting and growing until the tragic break. A thoughtless word, a look, a laugh, a glance at another who shares your displeasure. My inadequacy becomes your superiority, and I fall. Words fail. Knowing you are right, I laugh with you. If I let you know the pain you have caused, you will know where it is. The chink in my armor, my Achilles’ heel, the vulnerability I extended to you becomes your weapon of choice. I wrap my pain about me as a shield. I have heard you speak of others and know it must be so of me when I am not there. What fatality did you see in me that you must share with others in my absence? Just what did you expect? Have I not told you all along that I am a joke, a veil of coverings over the real me that I too despise? Why then should your betrayal surprise me? I know the balance of the scale or lack thereof. The tipping to the side. At times the weight of my faults bears down so hard the light goodness in me is catapulted off the other side.

Resolve. I steel myself and beg God to guard my lips and eyes that I might not cause such pain. Still, I know my guilt. Forgive me for the pain I have caused.

Do not pay attention to every word people say,
or you may hear your servant cursing you-
for you know in your heart
that many times you yourself have cursed others.
Ecclesiastes 7:21-22 (New International Version)

Main Page - MediaMythBusters

"In order to make even the most mundane of everyday decisions it is necessary to have good information. The public depends on television, radio and print media to deliver reliable and accurate information. For the most part, reporters and editors do their jobs and the result is an informed public. In some instances, however, the information relayed to the public is neither reliable nor accurate. Far too often, inaccurate information is reported and repeated until it achieves a certain myth status. The goal of this site is to debunk myths that take hold as a result of inaccurate or irresponsible media reports.

Truth Through Scrutiny -- When inaccurate information is reported in the news media, especially when it is reported on the wire services and gets repeated worldwide, it is difficult to "take back" the initial report and correct the record. With the rise of new media such as talk radio and blogs, traditional media has come under increased scrutiny and some stories that in past generations might have been left to stand, have been exposed as false. Those instances, which are often relegated to small print at the back of the newspaper, will be collected here."

Melissa painted me, originally uploaded by Spazyone.

I took the above close up photo of myself and put it on MySpace. I hate pictures of myself, and I have been trying to make myself less camera shy and figure out how to face the camera. I am so used to being behind it, I look like a dork when it's pointed at me. My friend Melissa painted me from the photo and surprised me with the painting above yesterday!! She really knows how to torture me! I love the painting and want to say it's beautiful, but it's of me!!! What's a girl to do? At least she left the wrinkles off. Thanks mk, I love it!

Mute Math on Jimmy Kimmel

"Bomb" Scares and the War of the Worlds

When Orson Wells broadcast "War of the Worlds" in 1939, people listened, heard the aliens were on their block and killed themselves without ever looking out their windows to see if it was true. Yep. It never occurred to them that they might have heard noises or that if the electricity were actually out they couldn't be listening to their radios. It has been a while since I studied this, so I am just stating my opinion based on recollections from a paper I wrote in the 80s. (Wonder where that paper is?)

Anyway, the point is that some cities are full of silly people. We have witnessed a recent event, by way of an ad campaign by the Cartoon Network, that most cities got through unscathed, but one city found overwhelming. AND, now we know they will get a couple mill out of it. Here is Jimmy Kimmel's take on it. I especially like the Homeland Security PSA (Public Service Announcement) at the end. Enjoy!

Unhappy Week Formula

Unhappy Week Formula
Current mood: giddy

Lucky Day

So, by now we all know that this is the most unhappy week of the year based on the formula by Cliff Arnall, a health psychologist at the University of Cardiff in Wales. The formula goes something like this:

W + (D-d) x TQ

———————————

M x NA

The variables are (W)eather, (D)ebt, (d) monthly salary, (T)ime since Christmas, time since failure to (Q)uit a bad habit, low (M)otivational levels and (NA), the need to take action.

It's the January Blues, which is, coincidentally, the title track off my debut CD (coming soon). Okay, I call it that as a song promo, but it's catchy, ya gotta admit that.

Anyway, I, like the rest of the residents of the USA and Britain to whom this formula applies (it is science after all), have been doing my level best to not give in to the inevitable. Unfortunately, I had not been as successful as I had hoped. That is until this morning.

Remember you heard this here first!

I WON SECOND PRIZE IN A BEAUTY CONTEST!!! WOOHOO!!!

Oh yeah, it feels good. Especially since I know, KNOW! I say, that I would have taken first place had Melissa had a chance to cut my hair before the contest. Once that woman goes after my head with a razor, it's gonna be all over, for the competition, that is.

Yep, so there I was in the um library sitting on the er um seat, yeah, the seat, so there I was and working on, among other things, my acquisition and entrepreneurial skills on my PDA, when I get the message.

"You have won second prize in a beauty contest." $10 prize.

Not only am I the most beautiful, but I get ten small, er mini, to boot! And you know if I had had had had (sorry) the haircut, I would have been awarded first place.

TOTALLY WICKED!!!

So, forget about psychological formulas.

Forget about the whole "I am one of those people who just don't like to be held back."

Forget it all, baby, because I am a WINNER!

Plus, I had three monopolies!

So, go out there and make it a good week. Don't give in to the morose pundits and psycho-the-rapists who want to tell you you can't be happy this week or any week.

Remember, good things can be found in bad places even when you least expect it.

Okay, and don't let the "Oh, she's listening to Amy Grant" thing convince you of anything regarding my musical tastes. Lead Me On is simply one of the best albums ever made. And, be assured, I haven't switched over to listening to hard core MOR (middle-of-the-road) I am still in my

Psycho, rockabilly, symphonic metal, punk, grunge, emo, classic folk southern hard rock, bluegrass, alternative, jazz fusion stage musically.
